Bangalore Halted - Feb 12 2007

For a change it was a very relaxed day to begin a new week. Pro-Kannada organisations called for a state wide Karnataka Bandh protesting the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.

It is grave injustice meted out to the people of Karnataka by alloting just 270 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water while Tamil Nadu is given a lions share of 419 TMC out of the total 716 tmc feet of Kaveri water which originates in the state of karnataka , Talakaveri - Madikeri district. Would we have got any amount of water from TN if the river originated in their state?

This is very bad news for the farmers of Karnataka especially those from Mandya, Mysore and surrounding areas who are dependent on this for cultivation. Bangalore which is majorly dependent on Kaveri water is definitely at loss. This petty share of water is definitely not going to be enough for the Kannadigas and the lakhs of people from other states who have settled in this Silicon Valley of India. Where is the water going to come for Greater Bangalore development?

Hopefully we are going to get justice. I agree that water, air and the other elements of nature are meant for all human beings irrespective of caste and language. If this has to be implemented then all the rivers in India have to be joined and nationalised and the water equally apportioned amongst every single state of our country.

The city wore a deserted look with buses and autorickshaws off the road, business activities paralysed and schools and colleges remaining closed. I went for a ride at 6 in the evening and it was pleasure to drive on the usually congested roads.

In the evening many people came out of their homes to break free from the virtual confinement. This was the scene in Sankey Tank.

To end on a philisophical note the animals , birds and nature do not know any boundaries. For them the entire earth is one. For the sun and this bird in picture it was just another day . As someone said the human beings are the most dangerous and cruelest of creatures on this planet.
